UEL is an Honorary Title - United Empire Loyalists, was a name given to those American Loyalists who, during the American. Revolutionary War of 1812 resettled in British North America, around Western Quebec now Upper Ontario.  These families were.  later granted by the Crown, land of 200 acres.

Letter to Mrs. Martha B. Shreve of Martins Ferry, Ohio from John Bradshaw, Rochester, Minneapolis, July 22nd, 1881

"Our great grandfather with his son John, our grandfather came to this country not long before the revolutionary war, and were living at Albany N.Y. when the war broke out.  Soon after in an incursion of Indians and others from Canada grandfather was taken prisoner and brought to Canada where he was kept prisoner for some time.  But as everything then was unsettled, and the privilege granted to such to take the oath of allegiance as British Subjects and be free.  Grandfather complied with the requirement and was set at liberty.  He lived some sometime in the neighbourhood of Cornwall ............. Finally settled in Upper Canada in the town of Osnabruck some ten miles from Cornwall and three or four miles back from the St. Lawrence River...."
