Notes:

Kilwarlin Estate Records of Ballycarrongannon, Parish of Castlereagh - PRONI D671/A1/28.  Sept 1742, Plot 1 John Norwood, Plot 2 William Norwood.  It is possible that Jane Norwood came from this area.

Was James Hill Bradshaw the son of Sgt James Bradshaw & Jane Norwood?

James Hill Bradshaw, (c. 1780 - 1813). In her book "Bradshaw and Allied Families" Susan Wright records the name of the first born son of Sgt. James Bradshaw as James or Hercules Hill Bradshaw.  Hillsborough Church record clearly states that his name was Hercules Hill Bradshaw.  Unfortunately there is no birth record to substantiate Susan Wright's "also known as" name of James Hill Bradshaw.  However, there are circumstantial records that would support Susan Wright's position.

18 November 1820, Sergeant James Bradshaw died - reference Will.  Not knowing his marriage date and assuming that his first child was born 1783, Sergeant James would have been born about 1760.

1 October 1792, Sergeant James Bradshaw has taken "Corporation Arms", Hillsborough (Pub/Inn)

9 -13 July 1795, Mr. Bradshaw, Hillsborough, Corporation Arms; Notice about Hillsborough Races  Corporation Arms, Hillsborough.

"Bradshaw begs leave to inform the Nobility & Gentry that the races at Hillsborough commence on Monday ...... during which there will be ordinaries for ladies and gentlemen and balls in the evening" Reference: Northern Star newspaper indexes 1792-1797

Comments

Was the position of Sergeant at Hillsborough Castle a part-time/honorary post and why in 1783, was Sergeant James’ occupation listed as a baker An earlier birth date of 1750 for Sgt. James would be a better fit with attaining the rank of sergeant and subsequently becoming a baker by 1783.  Also, 1750 makes it possible for James & Jane to have other children prior to 1783.  If this was the case, then, James Hill Bradshaw would be the brother of Hercules - John Foster’s uncle.  Why would Hercules Hill Bradshaw assumed guardianship of James Foster if there was no close family relationship.

If James Hill Bradshaw was same age as Margaret, then he is unlikely to be the brother of Sergeant James by reason of the same

Christian name of James – If cousins at best, then again why would Hercules act as his guardian?

The most likely conclusion is that James Hill Bradshaw was the son of Sgt. James Bradshaw and Jane Norwood.

Notes: William McLuhan & Mary Edith Bradshaw

William McLuhan (1807-1875) migrated to Canada with his wife Mary Edith Bradshaw (1813-1890) in 1846. They travelled with her nephew James Foster Bradshaw (1808-1863), son of James Hill Bradshaw, Mary Edith’s half brother.  The spelling of McCloughan appeared to have changed sometime in Canada. William and James don’t appear to have stuck together once they got to Canada. William & Mary settled in Ontario and James ended up in Quebec working for Bank of Upper Canada.

The above family records are shown by kind permission of Stuart MacKay, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  Stuart is a descendant of William McLuhan & Mary Edith Bradshaw and would welcome hearing from other members of this family - stu_jude@telus.net

Letter from Colonel G. Campbell, C. B., to Lieut. Bradshaw’s Father

(James Foster Bradshaw of Hillsborough, Co. Down)

                                                                                                                                                                Jalandhar,

                                                                                                                                                  6th February, 1858

My Dear Sir,

I had the pleasure to receive your letter regarding your son yesterday, and I am most happy to give you all the information in any power concerning his glorious though sad death, for it is indeed sad to be cut off so young.

He had behaved most gallantly, and, in taking the Bastion shortly after our entry at the Cashmere Gate, he was very conspicuous.  I directed a company to go and clear it – there was only one small entrance, sufficient to admit two men at a time.  He was with the company, and they forced their entrance in a most intrepid manner.  Your son had a personal encounter with a Sepoy inside the Bastion, and he cut off the native’s head with his sword at one blow.  The scene of your son’s death, which was instantaneous, was in a narrow street.

There was a gun placed in the centre of the street, which was about fourteen or sixteen wide, and in taking this gun he was shot dead on the spot.  I saw him immediately, and there was not a sign of life, so that he could have suffered no pain whatsoever.  I can assure you that he is much regretted by his brother officers, one and all.   I saw sufficient of his conduct on that eventful day to pronounce him to have been a fearless and intrepid officer.

We have his case, with several trinkets in it, which shall be sent to you by the first opportunity, but owing to the difficulty of obtaining carriage even for a small parcel in safety just now, there may be some delay.  I received a letter from his brother-in-law at Hong Kong about a fortnight ago, requesting that a memento might be reserved for him, and I have put aside a prayer Book and two rings, which, anticipating your approval, I will forward at the first opportunity.

An officer of the Regiment witnessed his interment in the graveyard of the Cantonment at Delhi.  Thirteen other officers were buried at the same time.  It was impossible that more officers could attend, as they were urgently required against the enemy in Delhi.  As soon as affairs are in a more settled state, a tablet will be erected to his memory by his brother officers.  At present it is impossible to get anything of the kind done.

Offering to Mrs. Bradshaw and yourself my sincere sympathy in your great loss,

                                                                                    Believe me,

                                                                                           My dear Sir,

                                                                                                    Sincerely yours,

                                                                                                            G. Campbell
