In 1896, when the old White Linen Hall of Belfast was being demolished
and the site cleared for the erection of the present City Hall, the workmen discovered
the original foundation stone of the building. In a cavity within
the stone was a glass tube, which was found to contain some coins and three rolled
up documents.
1. an account of the meeting of the volunteers at Dungannon on 15 Feb
1782
2. a Belfast Newsletter cutting of 25 April 1783 concerning the
Renunciation Act.
3. "Belfast, 28 April 1783. These papers were deposited underneath this
building by John McClean and Robert Bradshaw, with the intent that if they should
be found, they may be an authentic information to posterity that by the
firmness and unanimity of the Irish Volunteers, this kingdom (long
oppressed) was fully and completely emancipated. If in future times
there should be an attempt to encroach upon the liberties of this
country, let our
posterity look up with admiration to the glorious example of their
forefathers, who at this time formed an army, independent of Government, unpaid and
self-appointed, of eighty thousand men. The discipline, order and regularity of which was looked upon by all of Europe with wonder and
astonishment."

1819 - Obituary Notice
“On Friday morning, the 17th
inst., Robert Bradshaw. Esq., Banker, and President of
the Chamber of Commerce in this town. - Much and long
respected as an intelligent merchant, a well-informed
man, a tried and trust-worthy citizen; - of manners,
open, candid,
communicative - of morals, pure and
untainted; - of prepossessing appearance and of solid
worth - a liberal loyalist - attached to the whole
constitution, not less to his country, and consistent in
all, because always alive to the best interests of his
native land, in the encouragement of industry, in the
promotion of every patriotic undertaking, and in
